Eli Stone
"No matter what, you've just got to keep going.  Know what I mean?" -George Michael

Just before I left, my brother passed me this American TV series called Eli Stone.  He broached the subject with a sudden exclamation over family dinner.  "Have you heard of ELI Stone before??"  The very mention of the name was enough for a twinge.  How many people are called Eli?  Aside from my ex-boyfriend and first love, very few in my part of the world!

The show's about Eli Stone, a successful
attorney who begins having larger-than-life visions that compel him to do insane things.  The pilot opens with him having sex with his fiancée when he hears a George Michael song playing. "The music!  Do you hear the music??" He stops, stumbles out of bed (much to his fiance's chagrin!) and runs off to find the tune that has been following him the whole day.  In the end, he gets more than what he asks for and finds George Michael--yes the very man himself--standing in his living room, singing Faith!  He promptly concusses.

Eli ends up to be suffering from an inoperable brain aneurysm
that causes him to experience realistic hallucinations.  His staff meetings turns into a war zone (he ducks under the table midway and yells "TAKE COVER!!!").  He sees dragons and knights fighting downtown San Fran.  Or even better, he sees a church choir singing in accompaniment with his boss on piano solo.  Ironically these "episodes" Eli suffers always relate to the plot of the episode, in that they tell him what next to do.

What got me sold though, was that the whole series is a loose tribute to George Michael.  One of the producers Greg Berlanti is a huge fan, and all the episodes in the first season are different titles of George's songs.  Even got Georgie to star in a couple of episodes (!!)  Together with an interesting plot, a stunningly well-written script, and a captivating cast, I am absolutely sold and stoned.  This series keeps me in touch with my English in Spanglish-filled Spain.  I'd recommend it anytime.

Three thumbs up!
