4 to 7
Learnt from a coach today that players need approximately 4 to 7 full competition matches before they are fit enough (mentally, phyiscally, stress-wise, etc.) to push their playing level up.  And of course, the player has to be in FIGHT mode in all seven to make it count.

Truly, the best practices is match play.  Everything has to revolve around it.
